Jonny Abbot is the founder of The Upholstery Studio Sydney. He started as an apprentice in an antique store in Drummoyne, Sydney. This is when he developed a strong foundation in upholstery repair and recovery of all periods of furniture. After completing his apprenticeship, he spent 12 months based in New York working with the biggest importer of Biedermeier furniture. Upon returning to Sydney, he worked in industrial furniture, and midcentury restoration. He went on to take up an offer to work on a major motion picture. Film work is still an addition to his upholstery work.

In the early 2000s Jonny took the opportunity to work in China. Based in Southern China his main role was product development specializing in furniture and homewares. He took clients ideas from concept, through manufacturing, all the way to export. During this time Jonny developed a unique insight into Chinese production processes, particularly as they relate to furniture and homewares.

He returned to Sydney and worked in some of Sydney’s well known upholstery businesses including Absolute Upholstery, Sydney Upholstery, Bound Interiors as well as architects and designers across Sydney.
